Hard Candy

Sunday, July 10, 2011

Hello Darlings,

How was your weekend? I've been going through so many changes in my postgrad life, I don't even know where to begin. For one, these are the first set of gesture drawings that I've produced outside of FIT and since completing my degree. You have no idea how strange it feels to not have one of my incredible professors checking over my work, making sure the figure is just right, or that the rendering is true to me. I'm really starting to feel like I'm flying solo for the first time in two years. It's terrifying, it's exciting, but above all, it's time.

I've joined the NYC Meetup group titled Would You Rock This that is devoted to the promotion and celebration of the field of fashion illustration. People from all creative principles, including graphic and fashion design, attend alongside illustrators to draw from a fashion model. What I especially love is that they style the outfits of our model according to a theme. This past session was Lower East Side Rocker. When I finished drawing the looks, I wanted to contrast them with a sweet background for a clever juxtaposition. Hard candy felt like the perfect match.

A little bit tough, a side of sweet, the perfect treat!!

Enjoy,
Meag xx

  1. Meag, i just checked out the group's side - wow, that's amazing! so many good illustrators!

i can imagine how you feel right now - exciting times. happy times! new beginnings always terrify me a little, too (to be honest i'm pretty scared of new things, i'd rather stay in my comfort zone - which is bad), but it's the best time to take a chance and get what you really want. so have a great (solo) flight! xo

and your illustrations... isn't that exactly how we wanna be? tough and a little sweet ;) have a great week ahead!

  5. These are beautiful! It sounds like postgrad life has been long awaited, and just like your illos, bittersweet. I've been to the Would You Rock This site before, I never knew it was an actual meet up group. Cool! Toronto needs something similar :)

  7. Those candy pieces bring in a beautiful swirl of colour, and make the whole thing that much sweeter looking :) The colours of hard candy go really well with these bright, passionate colours you've chosen. It really brings balance between the foreground and background.
I hope post-grad life is treating you well!

  11. Stunning! I love it how you can put for example with a few strokes a pretty face, the lines in hair, the dynamics, how the body moves... it looks like it's so easy for you. And what you make of it as final result, out of the blue, the combination of colors and other ornaments, magnificent.
Such a great talent, you really don't need any checkers ;-)
